The way we build is a problem. Its been taking a toll on the environment, society and the economy. A big part of this is concrete which has long been a factor, in carbon emissions because of how its made.. Things are starting to change. New developments, in concrete are getting ready to upheave the construction business cutting back on greenhouse gases and making building materials lasts longer. This could be what we need to make buildings more sustainable.
For years researchers and engineers have been looking for ways to make concrete more earth friendly. One major breakthrough is the development of concrete which relies on materials and fewer carbon emissions. This isn't the solution though. Using fly ash, slag and silica fume in place of some of the cement, in mixtures also makes a big difference. Not does it cut down on the carbon footprint. It also makes the concrete tougher and more versatile so it can withstand all sorts of weather conditions.
The innovation goes a step further with techniques, like using carbon dioxide to cure concrete than water. This approach permanently locks away CO2, with the bonus of speeding up the solidification process and producing concrete. As a result buildings and other structures all while keeping carbon dioxide from entering the atmosphere. A potent greenhouse gas that would normally be released during traditional curing methods.
Theres been an breakthrough, in the world of construction. Something called 'smart concrete'. Basically it's concrete with built in sensors that keep an eye on the structures condition. These sensors are clever enough to pick up on things, like cracks and stresses. They can even measure how pollution the concrete is absorbing. The upshot is that this technology makes structures safer and longer lasting. It also helps cities plan sustainably by allowing for more efficient maintenance and use of resources.
When cities make the most of technologies they can reap some big rewards. For one they can cut down on the heat island effect reduce the amount of water that pours into storm drains and save a bundle, on maintenance costs. By working ideas into the way they use concrete cities can make a dent in their environmental footprint. At the time they can make their infrastructure more durable and better suited, to the needs of the people who live there.
